Endmor Steel Millers license suspended after Citizen TV exposé on Syokimau residents

Endmor Steel Millers has had its business license suspended over pollution a day Citizen TV aired an exposé on the plight of Syokimau residents.

Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua said there is a matter between the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)  and Endmor in court but his government is not party to it.

“…to safeguard the lives of our people whose respiratory systems are being affected by the pollution, even rendering them in more danger during this difficult time of COVID-19, Machakos County Government has suspended the business license of the said company until measures in the attached report are dealt with,” he said in a statement.

According to the Governor, Endmor needs to stop air pollution and clean production processes are adhered to (as per set guidelines).

The facility is also required to ensure that occupational health and safety standards as well as protocols are put in place to the satisfaction of regulator NEMA and Machakos County Government.

Further, Endmor will have to make sure that air quality standards meet the set standards of air quality set out by NEMA.

The Ministry of Health directed that all business premises follow guidelines for social distancing, use of face masks, hand washing and daily recording of temperatures for all workers and visitors.
