One of the greatest downfalls of winter is the toll it can take on your skin. The low temperatures, harsh winds, and dry climate can affect your skin more than you might realize. Over the years, I have learned to tweak my skincare routine according to the season. In the winter, you can bet that I focus my energy on skincare products that are ultra hydrating. Lucky for us, the winter has been relatively mild so far – although I do sense the frigid temps and snow falls will be just around the corner. So you might want to act fast when it comes to a beauty routine that can combat all the environmental impacts. With the abundance of products on the market, it can be intimidating to sift through every page so I wanted to make a guide for you to easily shop and compare. Here are the foolproof skincare products to cure dry skin this winter.
To keep your skin rejuvenated throughout the winter, I highly recommend investing in a quality exfoliator. It is best to opt for one that is gentle on the skin but efficient enough to remove dead particles. If you overuse a harsh exfoliant, you could actually be doing a lot more damage to your skin than good – so limit it to just a few times per week. One that is proving to be a cult favorite amongst beauty lovers is the Liquid Exfoliant from Paula’s Choice. It works with any skin type and does wonders in smoothing skin all over. Another highly-raved exfoliator is the Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica which is really gentle and soothing for those with sensitive skin.
Swap for a Heavy Cream
You might use a lighter face lotion for the spring and summer seasons as a heavy one might be too much on top of the humidity and warm temperatures. However, since the climate is so much more dry during the winter, it is important to swap the lighter lotion for a heavy cream. The skin’s barrier is more susceptible to breakage when it is colder so a product that can provide ultimate hydration to lock in all the moisture. For those who experience detrimental dry winter skin, I recommend applying this both morning and nighttime to seal in the hydration as much as possible.
Avoid Harsh Cleansers
Another tip to cure your dry skin this winter is to avoid using any harsh cleansers. Some of these are riddled with so many chemicals or unnecessary fragrances can strip your skin from its natural oils. Instead, swap your harsh cleansers with more gentle alternatives. You may even want to look for soothing ingredients such as rose or oatmeal. The Drunk Elephant Jelly Cleanser is everything I just mentioned and more. It does not contain any sulfates and is also vegan and cruelty-free!
Don’t Skimp on Sunscreen
One of the most detrimental things you can do for your skin is to neglect the protection! We all know that sunscreen use is ramped up during the summertime when we spend copious amounts of time outdoors. But did you know it is just as important to wear it in the winter? Think about it. There are still harsh sun rays that come through open windows that could have long term effects on your skin. So be sure to always include sun protection in your daily routine, even at this time of the year.
Add a Facial Oil
My final tip on how to rescue your dry skin this winter is to incorporate a facial oil into your regimen. A high-quality product will really add that lack of moisture back into your skin to give it that plump you have been missing. If you are new to facial oils, it is recommended that you apply a thin layer before your sunscreen during the day. However, during the nighttime, apply it last to lock in the hydration as you slumber. Also, upon application, be sure to gently pat it into your skin (this applies for almost all skincare products) so it can absorb more easily.
