The political marriage between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga is over, Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has claimed.
Kanga’ta on Sunday said leaders from Mt Kenya region allied to Deputy President William Ruto have been vindicated after being vilified for questioning the political marriage.
“We warned President Uhuru not to enter any political partnership with Raila but he refused and the government started fighting us. Now he can see for himself,” he said.
Kang’ata said as an experienced politician, he knows once mistrust enters a political relationship, it cannot be repaired.
“If we dared follow the handshake and fought Ruto, we would now be isolated,” he said.
The senator said it is only Ruto who has stood with President Uhuru since 2022 and can be trusted, unlike Raila who can walk out on you any time.
The Senator, however, told President Uhuru to join them in backing DP Ruto, adding that he still their leader and they respect him.
Kang’ata’s remarks come only a day after Senate Minority Leader James Orengo accused President Uhuru lieutenants at Harambee House of trying to derail ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential journey.
Orengo together with other Raila allies warned of a scheme by some individuals in the Office of the President to block Uhuru’s Handshake partner from ascending to the presidency.
“I want to warn some top civil servants paid by taxpayers’ money to stop meddling in the country’s political leadership,” he said in Ugenya, Siaya County yesterday.
The statement lends credence to Raila’s elder brother Oburu Oginga’s assertion that the ODM boss could still work with Deputy President William Ruto in next year’s elections.
Orengo said the plans by Harambee House “prefects” were reminiscent of President Mwai Kibaki’s sunset days in office when his handlers backed ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi for the presidency to the chagrin of Uhuru and Ruto but still lost.
