Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has filed a censure motion against President William Ruto for what he terms questionable conduct while in office.
Maanzo argues that Ruto has breached the Constitution in a myriad of occurrences, including failing to protect Kenyans from police brutality pursuant to articles 131 and 25 of the Constitution on the fundamental rights and freedoms of Kenyans and promoting and enhancing the unity of the nation.
The Senator further argued that Ruto has marginalised a section of Kenyans and continued to heighten tensions in the nation by failing to ensure there is proper public participation in the implementation of his contentious politics.
Some of them include the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), University funding model, Housing Levy, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) takeover by Adani Holdings among others.
Maanzo therefore asked the Senate to censure the President and his conduct be checked.
This comes after Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana also previously filed a censure motion in the Senate to discuss Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s character.
Mungatana stated that DP Gachagua has breached the law provisions on how he should conduct himself in office and administer his roles, accusing him of disregarding his oath of office.
“Article 260 of the constitution of Kenya categorizes the deputy president as a state officer whose conduct and behaviour shall abide by the provisions of article 75 of the constitution of Kenya and the general leadership and integrity code for state officers, contained in the leadership Act,” submitted Mungatana.
Mungatana noted that Gachagua, since assuming office, has made utterances that continue to create tensions and divisions among Kenyans.
“The public utterances made by Rigathi have marginalized sections of Kenyans, created and continue to heighten tension among different ethnic communities in Kenya,” he said.
Among these utterances, Mungatana added, include matters on employment opportunities in the public service, allocation of resources to the devolved units and incitement if a section of Kenyans to disobey lawful directives by some county governments.
An impeachment motion has since been tabled against the Deputy President on Tuesday, with 291 Members of Parliament supporting it.
